Please help,Server hangs at finding module dependencies
« on: February 05, 2004, 06:06:36 PM »
Have SME 5.1.2 on my server for over a year...was having problems with accessing mail outside network. rebooted server,
mounted proc filesystem ok
configuring kernel parameters ok
setting clock ok
activating swap partitions ok
setting hostname server ok
mounting usb filesystem ok
initializing usb controler ok
checking root filesystem/
was not cleanly unmounted, checked forced(0.5%non-continguous) passed
remounting root filesystem in read write mode ok
now hangs at finding module dependencies.

cannot run fsck
could use some input please.

I also have a computer hanging on bootup - a
control c

got past the hangup but it does not accept password once booted up.

I was actually putting in a different harddrive and installing sme over so I could restore a backup whenI noticed the network cable to the network switch seems to have gone bad. so decided to try one more boot with the original drive and thats when I decided to try a
Control C which allowed the system to come up

Then the problem of password not working cropped up. I know I have seen in this forum some method of bypassing password or resetting password but can't seem to find it.

Thanks, Ken

Thankyou, for at least replying.. I was leaning toward hardware anyways. As I have not had anyone else give me any input. I had a bad keyboard but that did not sove problem. I have not done any changes what so ever, hardware or software so...I may have a harddrive failure, box has been on constantly for over a year. It was a brand new AMD 1.3 with 512 ram and 20gig. The problem is..it is also my firewall and router for my home network, and just to get on here I had to get a new router. Well wanted to go wireless anyways..will update on progress. as for your password...try getting in thru putty on your lan..or try https://server/server-manager on your desktop. had a simular problem a while back and reboot took care of it for me.

Ken,
Thanks for the control C advice...(someone needs to publish a doc on the small tricks of linux, been searching the web to no availe)

I also had the password problem, went thru "https://server/server-manager" on my desktop off my lan and reset my system password to the same.
Now I can login as root on putty again.

Does anyone Know of a sys check I can run to find why I hang at module dependensies every time I boot?
everything seems to work ok. Have not hooked to internet as of yet though.

Thanks Dennis
