RAID compatibility in SME 6
« on: February 16, 2004, 10:05:08 PM »
I'm looking to build an SME6 box with a RAID array. Aside from software raid options, which cards are compatible with SME 6?

I was assuming if the array is configured in BIOS prior to installing SME surely it should be presented as a single volume and be a standard install as far as SME is concerned, is this the case?

Regards,
Jason.

Have you read this thread: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=20772.0 ?
Apart from that kind of solution, I seem to remember only 3ware cards being compatible with Redhat 7.3 on which SME is largely built.

I have a SME 6.0 box running with a hardware RAID 1.  I have a Highpoint 404 IDE controller with 2 60gig IBM Deskstars.  I setup the RAID in the Highpoint bios and then ran the SME setup choosing the single disc option.  Installed without any fuss.

Jason, the short answer is that any RAID controller that's compatible with RedHat 7.3 should work with SME 6.  The 3ware cards are a popular option for IDE RAID, as they're (IMO) reasonably priced, well-supported, and very fast.  My server is a Dell PowerEdge 4300 using Dell's PERC2/SC controller, which works perfectly (Dell has drivers available for download, which will monitor the array, but they aren't needed to use it).
