I've just set up my SME 6 final machine as a public web, mail and bulletin board server for the first time. It also acts as the house server for a tiny business - its only real duty, outside of print and web serving to the workstations, is to act as the backup-to-tape machine for our daily output of scanned documents - but I obviously don't want it compromised by hostiles. I have no qualms about the firewall aspect of SME itself; I've seen no documented breaches after following the forums for several years now, but monitoring invasion attempts is something I have never needed to know about until now.
I have opened ports 80, 110, and 143 through my adsl router, to allow web, pop, and imap access, and everything is working perfectly, so I'd be very interested to hear which monitoring and protection software the experienced forum members advise me to run to keep my system safe.
