Topic: Dial up problems

I have downloaded and installed e-smith without any hitches. I am new to linux, however the install instructions are quiet straight forward. I cannot get a dial up connection  with my isp. I have tried several different modems with no luck. I cannot hear the modem dialing as with windows however if I list on the line with a handset I can hear the modems talking. Is this a modem problem, an e-smith bug, an isp problem ( I have tried 2) or a stupid user problem. Can anybody help, help, help!!

Can you tell us which modems you tried?  Were they PCI or ISA?  Linux does not work with so called "winmodems."  I don't run a dial-up server, but I did run a linux box at home with a hardware ISA modem and it wasn't very difficult to set up.

I would suggest you check your modem against a list of ones suppored in Linux (try hardware.redhat.com).

Since you can hear the modems 'talking' I would guess the modem is working o.k. but it is a 'scripting' problem - i.e. the ISP is not getting the responses it expects from the e-smith server.
Maybe try a 'minicom' connection from the linux command line and see what information is flowing back and forth i.e. login to e-smith system as root, start the minicom program and try to dial the ISP manually.

Thanks for the clues. I ran minicom and there appears to be a problem after or from chap. Can you give me any hints on how to view the dial up settings. I have not used linux before. Thanks for your time.
