Anyone check this out yet?
http://mt-daapd.sourceforge.net/

It's an implementation of Apple's Digital Audio Access Protocol (DAAP).

*note: mt-daapd requires the libid3tag library.
A RH7.3 rpm can be found at http://dag.wieers.com/packages/libid3tag/.

After a bit of fiddling I managed to get it to "work" (didn't test Fairplay protected AAC music yet), but I was looking for assistance in getting an "out-of-the-box SME safe" version worked out or at least a "safe" how-to.

Have you succeeded in your quest? This is exactly what I am trying to do, but my knowledge is VERY limited in this area. I got as far as trying to compile it on the SME server, but am now stuck because I haven't got a compiler (obvious if you know I'm sure, but as I said my Linux knowledge is V limited....)

Can you please lead me (simply) to how you got it working?

Thanks

Gareth

PS. For any-one wondering what this is all about, it's to add iTunes MP3 streaming functionality to the server.

Gareth,

I did have it working (well within the limits of the software at the time).  As for steps, I don't recall off the top of my head.  I can dig through my notes this weekend (I'm at work & notes are at home) & I will post some steps for you to try.

A quick note as to what was not working in the version I was using (0.2.0) - the interface for restarting mt-dappd was broken (I think this was a known bug for the project).

The impact of this:
Say you had an i-bay setup to dump your music to, then you start mt-daapd.  mt-daapd would index the ibay & serve this up to your iTunes (worked with Win & Mac) fine.  However, if you added more music, the only way I could get mt-daapd to index & recognize the new songs was to actually restart the box.  I guess this wasn't too bad if you don't add fequently.  I had to put this side project on hold while I dealt with more pressing issues, so I never really checked to see if there was a way to (easily) correct this.

Anyway, I'll post the steps as soon as I can.
Please check back here this weekend (read late Saturday).

Also, it looks like the project has posted a newer (unstable) version to try, so I might give that a go if I have time.

Gareth,
Sorry for the delay.  Got slammed between work & a whole slew of personal stuff.  I did manage to get a step-by-step hammered out. This is *REALLY* rough at this point, so please email me for more info - wc808sme@gmail.com and I can send you the instructions to try/test out.

Hope to talk to you soon.
