My old reliable Windows D4 time client has had problems with SME6
I found an old thread including the tip

in /etc/ntp.conf, add this line:
broadcast 192.168.1.255

I changed /etc/ntp.conf , adding
broadcast 192.168.0.1 ( the machines local IP )
and D4 immediately worked!
I'm editing etc/e-smith/templates/etc/ntp.conf/00timeServer
iptraf isn't showing unusual activity
not sure why this was needed, any comments out there ?
