Would like to setup and host www.yyy.xxx.net - have created i-bay and set up  vurtual domain under e-smith but the yyy is not visible form the outside, just the xxx.  Can anybody help ?

check to make sure your ibay is set to allow access from the outside.

Can you get to www.xxx.net/ibay-name from the outside?

David,
If xxx.net is your domain name then www is merely a hostname that points to the primary e-smith website. So what you want to do is create a hostname (yyy) that points to your new i-bay. Is that correct? If so then you don't need to create a virtual domain (this function is used for new domains ie bbb.net). What you need to do is modify your DNS records and create the above hostname (yyy) and then redirect that host to the URL of your i-bay (http://www.xxx.net/i-bay_name). If you bought your domain name from INWW, they don't have a option to do this so you will have to move your domain over to someone that does offer this, like www.mydomain.com.

If you can get to www.xxx.net/ibay-name from the outside and have set up a virtual domain then it's most likely your provider of the domainname that´s not supporting sub-domains.

in this case, when you are hosting the webserver yourself it is better to use virtual domains just as you intended.

Do you have a static ip or do you use a dynamic-dns service? Check with your DNS provider if they support sub-domains.

I use dyndns.org and have subdomains enabled and it is working fine.

thanks for the replys
The i-bay is visible from the outside as www.xxx.net/i-bay so I think everything is OK there. We have a static IP.
I'm using directnic to delegate the www.xxx.net domain and they inform me that I do not need to delegate or set up name servers for the subdomain with their service.  Is this correct ?

thanks

You can still try to temporarily create a domain at a dynamic dns provider just to check if it works through them. It´s an easy way to narrow down the problem and to see if the problem is in E-smith or at directnic.

If it doesnt work with the dyn dns either then you have a problem in E-smith.

Also, i had the same problem once. Have you checked the virtual domain entry to make sure you didn´t selected 'primary' as your root for that subdomain? It sounds quite silly to say this, but I have done that mistake.
