Install 6.0.1 and need more memory
« on: April 13, 2004, 11:39:55 PM »
I have an old intel Mobo "ZAPPA" wiht P75 and 64MB RAM.
I had a E-SMITH 5.6 installed on it, no problem for a long time.
I got a "new" old P266 Compaq. Installed SME-6.0.1 and no problem.
Now I want to intsall a SME-6.0.1 on my original P75/64Mb and give it to
a friend of mine so she can learn SME-6.0.1 ans XOOPS. The install prog
found the old system (5.6) and asked me if I want to upgrade: no problem
go ahead.
After a while it says I need more memory and abort installation.
I started again and type [more ...] to have more options. OK then,
select brand new install and same problem I need more mem.
I checked contribs ans it says 64M minimum: so I should have no problem.
I even tried 6.0beta3 and same "need more memory"
Now I am trying 5.6 and it looks OK.
In the installation, I did (^-alt-F1) to get a second console and I "cat
/proc/meminfo" and its says 64MBytes.

Where do I go wrong?
Is it possible 6.0.1 on a P75/64MB? it should...

Any help appreciated

Thank you RavenIV but it is working well with 5.6
The documentation for SME says:
Minimum RAM32 MB (64 MB recommended)

The documentation is optimistic and is for a running system without other ad in contribs and extra services enabled.
I have read here that 128Mb is the minimum required to do an upgrade to v6.0

64mb is extremely optimistic

presumably the ram is very old as well, as would be the hard disk

128Mb may be fine also, but at less than 256Mb "top" will show fairly clearly there is a lot of swapping going on. once you kick in any mysql and php activity the machine will start to swap more and more become unbearably slow with only 64mb, 128 will be ok with 1 or 2 users. 256Mb with 5 users is so-so, but 512 and sme starts to get cracking.
