I'm a trifle concerned about security.

I've got an SME 5.6 machine that I want to connect to my network while I'm online.

I've got a 10/100 hub that I can't seem to get to work at more than 10. It's a bit odd because I know my cables are capable individually of 100.

Anyway, it's been suggested that I put a switch between the server and the PCs and then a router between that and my modem.

I'm probably a bit off topic on this but where can I find a nice description of what exactly the switch and router do and how I'd set it all up.

If your connecting the sme server to your cable modem the connect speed will be Tbase 10.

Connecting a base/100 sme server to the modem will still only yield base/10

Cabling has nothing to do with the speed for the most part.

Typical config ..

cable modem >> sme server (external network interface card aka NIC)

sme server (internal NIC) >> hub/switch

hub/switch >> all client computers.

There are other configs but this is the basic.

SME server is a gateway/router with firewall.

Hardware router can be installed between cable modem and SME server if desired, however addtional config will be needed.

Hmm. I just tried the hub on the network. It worked slowly with Windows 98 and SME. With XP, it keeps cutting out. I paid £40 for that in Swansea Market. Like everything Mike-o-Soft sells, it seems to have been dodgy. I'll get myself a switch now from Asis instead
