I'm trying to communicate via my hub to my sme server.

My problem is I'm not sure I'm using the hub right.

I have, on the back, 6 cat-5 ports labelled 1,2,3,4,5 and uplink. I plugged the server into uplink and the PC into 1. I had appallingly slow and unreliable data transfer. When I whipped the hub out and use a xo cable, everything that would have gone in 171 minutes via the =hub went in 4 mins.

Suggestions?

(1) normaly the uplink-port is used to connect two hub's with an x-cable.
(2) do you have the same type of cards in both computers (100MBit or 10MBit)?
(3) if you have different cards (1x 10MBit and 1x 100MBit) you will need a switch.
(4) maybe your hub is damaged?

cheers klaus

Note: you can not use the uplink port and the port
adjacent to that port at the same time....one or the other .....not both.
The normal port and the uplink port are wired on
the same port internally on the hub/switch.
The differance is the uplink port is wire so you can
connect another hub w/straight thru cable to the next
hub. You could connect the next hub to the any normal
port ...however you would need a crossover cable.

Linksys has some detailed info/diagrams on their site
for cable pinouts and hub/switch connection diagrams.

If one is look for a nice switch try

http://www.trendnet.com/en/products/TE100-S24_1.htm

24 port switch w/autodetect wiring.
Real nice feature.!!!

Plug any kind of wired cat 5 cable into the switch

and it will autodetect the wiring in the cable.

No need for straight thru or cross over cabling.

You can even used the cable you screwed up the wiring
on when you installed the conectors.

Use any port for uplink with any cable.
