I am a new user to linux. I have e-smith running at present on a 18gb scsi drive now heres oppertunity for you I will soon have the chance of aquiring a compaq server with dual scsi hdd's, now assuming i load e-smith fresh onto these and then add my 18Gb for user/web use ie: /home how do i do it?
e-smith only sees 1 hdd (or 2 raid level one)

scenario   hard drive 1(sda1)+2(sda2) mirrored/raid1
put 3rd in (sda3)

3rd was running a full e-smith server and was backed up onto a scsi tape drive that i am also planning to move over to the new server.
has anyone done a HOW TO on adding/configuring a 2nd hard drive if not could an expert advise a newbie who is trying to get away from nt server how to?

If the new server has a hardware RAID adapter then it (the adapter) should take care of all the details of disks and E-Smith should only see "a disk".
I tried a similar setup using a DPT Smartcache IV card and two x 2 gig SCSI hdds. The mirroring details were taken care of by the DPT card. E-Smith saw one 2 gig disk.  Worked flawlessly.  I tried disconnecting one disks power plug and E-smith kept churning away. There was no system notification that there was a disk problem but the on-card audio alert told everyone in the house. Rebooting to the DOS DPT manager showed there was a disk failure- reconnected the power and commenced rebuild - When all was back (about half an hour) rebooted E-smith again. Brilliant

Ok on a raid system, but l have 3 x 40gb ide hard drives, 2 have been working linux and contain mp3's and programs. So l dont want to make a new raid system from them, l want to keep them seperate.

how do you install these onto the third new one with e-smith running??
how do you install the new shared areas?

1 x 40gb IDE e-smith server gateway
2 x 40gb IDE original linux redhat 6.2

how do you get into fstab?
and then mount them

any help would be apreciated

thks

will get you started..

Do try with some spare disks first to get the hang of it. As long as yu don't format anything, you are safe, but playing around like this is not supported by e-smith etc.etc.etc...

It IS standard unix fare though.

good luck
