hi again,

has anyone got any experience setting up e-smith with use over a cable modem service?

I am in the UK and have my service with NTL I am not sure of their policies with setting up servers etc and not sure what services would be available to me?

cheers!

I'm currently trying to do just that (with blueyonder, the telewest HSI offering in the UK) but so far I haven't been able to get the NIC on the internet side of the gateway recognised by the cable modem (it's the same card, I have to keep swapping back to my m$ box to get internet access.

blueyonder's policy is that they don't mind if you use other OSes with their cable modem as long as it doesn't mess up their network. And of course, they don't support it.

The consolation for me is that I know that there are people who have set up their red hat boxes to work as gateways with blueyonder, so there's a glimmer of hope there.

Anyone that has set up their e-smith server with blueyonder, I'd love to hear from you...

Hi everyone,

Just a few of comments based on my experience with cable modem services in the US.  I have setup E-smith servers with both Cox cable and AT&T broadband here in the US successfully.  Both times I had a little difficulty, but I was able to resolve it with a little trial and error and a few phone calls.

1.  On cox, I had problems initally getting an IP address for the external NIC.  After many hours of messing around with my server, I decided to try just unplugging my cable modem for a few minutes.  This did the trick.

2.  AT&T was a little more difficult, but I have been able to get it to work.  AT&T registers MAC (hardware) addresses and uses these values to assign IP addresses.  I call AT&T and got them to add the MAC address of the external NIC on my E-smith box and I was up and running a few minutes later.

Hope this helps,
John Goodwin

I'm using E-Smith with the NTL cable modem service, works an absolute charm. I had no problems getting it going.

NTL have a fairly reasonable usage policy, they don't object to personnal servers as long as they are none commercial and don't eat up too much band width. I run FTP, HTTP and SSH (for work to home access).

The "ntl.discussion.home-networking" news group has quite a few guys using E-Smith who could help you out with any specific issues.

I have an e-smith 4.1.2 setup with Blueyonder..... works like a charm.

I had a little bit of grief getting it running to begin with - it took a bit of fannying around to get Blueyonder to recognise the NIC. Sounds like you've got the NIC registered OK if you have it running in M$.

I got in a mess to start with - I tried to only register the one MAC address, and then swap over the internal/external NICs in e-smith. That was a bad idea, the solution..... register both your NICs with Blueyonder. Make sure e-smith is setup with defaults, then wait for a day or so (for the MAC addresses to filter through BY's system), leave your CM off overnight, fire it up in the morning and all should be dandy.

Like the NTL guys, there's a few e-smith users in the blueyonder.comp.linux newsgroup.

I'll keep my eyes open for followups, and will help you where possible.
