Setting wireless access points / routers
« on: September 25, 2005, 04:39:03 AM »
I know this forum is not the best place to ask this question, but perhaps someone in SME world could provide some guidance (even if it's simply a reference to a more appropriate forum).

I have two clusters of computers as follows:
Cluster1
SMEServer
PC1
PC2
Hub
Cable modem
Cable modem is connected to eth0 on SMEServer, and hub is connected to the eth1 on SMEServer.  PC1 and PC2 are connected to Hub.

Cluster2
PC3
Mac1
PC3 is connected to hub in Cluster1 with temporary cable.

I'm trying to set up a wireless network, such that PC3 and Mac1 can be connected to cluster1 wirelessly. (so we're not tripping over the cable any more).

My intended configuration is to purchase two Wireless routers and replace the hub in Cluster1 with Router1 and attach PC3 and Mac1 to Router2.  Then, I intend to configure the routers such that they "talk" and share network resources through SME Server.

Here are my questions:

1) Is that configuration possible (ie. can two routers be configured to be on the same internal network and provide access to the SME Server.  Essentially, they will be acting as Two wireless ethernet hubs and won't actually be acting as a router to share internet resources - SME will still do that.

2) Currently, I'm using SMEServer as Server/Gateway.  Is there any advantage to use Router1 rather than SMEServer?  In other words, would a "real" router be more or less secure than SMEServer.

Note: My biggest problem is that Mac1 is old (Classic - OS 8.6) and it's expensive or impossible to purchase a compatible USB wireless ethernet adapter.  Otherwise, I'd just have router 1 and use ethernet adapters on PC 3 and Mac 1 to connect to router.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Rob

Hi mackayr
Looking close at post i think using wireless bridges might suit you better
Just google wireless bridge
here is a starter

IMHO, if all the computers are colse enough or at least, can "see" the bridge/router/AP's antennas you should use a single  wireless device. being AP routers more configurable than bridges.
most of AP-routers can be set to manage different local networks., The mac workstation could be connected  directly to one of the AP´s rj45 lan sockets (most of them give you up to four wired lan connections) you could use another wire to connect to the lan nic of the SME.
I'll suggest to leave the SME box (with all the updates) as your main router/gateway/firewall, and as the unique dhcpserver.
encryptyon of lan wireless traffic should be a must.
hope this help your choice.
