SSL On E-Smith

Hello,

I've just installed E-Smith 6.0 onto a new hard drive. Previously it worked fine, but the hard drive packed up.

Everything seems to be functioning correctly now except none of the client machines (running a variety of Windows) are able to access secure websites. The user types in a secure website address, clicks 'go' and after a while a 'page cannot be found' error message appears.

I'd be extremely grateful if someone could provide a suggestion. I can't find anything online that describes the same problem.

The server connects to the net using ISDN if that helps.

Cheers

Chris

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

I'm not by the e-smith machine at the moment, but will be able to double check everything in a day or two.

However, I don't recall configuring a proxy server during installation. None of the client machines are set up to use a proxy.

The server is also acting as a gateway. It connects to the net using an ISDN account.

I'm a little new to this. Which specific set-up details would you like?

I really appreciate your help.

SME has a proxy - squid. I meant the proxy settings of the Client.

Hello,

OK. Thanks for clearing that up.

Each client runs Windows 98. They are set up with specific IP addresses (192.168.*.*). Subnet is 255.255.255.0. Gateway is the IP of the server (192.168.0.99) and prefered DNS server is 192.168.0.99. I installed v6 from scratch last month, previously everything worked fine (same client config) using an earlier version of e-msmith. v5.5 I think.

Hope this helps. Again, I really appreciate your help.

Can you ping around ip's/names server <-> clients? which information provides ipconfig /all on 98 machines? How does the SME resolve DNS names? Have you entered an ip of your ISPs DNS on initial configuration? If you don't remember choose "configure this server" from main menu.

Hello,

Yes, I can ping between clients and the server. Everything is working fine. Clients can view websites, send external e-mails, receive external e-mails using a multidrop account, send internal e-mails, access i-bays. In fact, everything except access any secure websites. Anything that goes over SSL doesn't work.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Do you think the problem has something to do with the server's proxy server? Is there anyway to view config details for this?

Thanks for any replies.

Fixed the problem. Needed to manually set up each client to use the proxy server on the server. Went to control panel, internet options, connections, lan settings and set the proxy server as <server-ip>:3128

Hope this helps someone else.
