General forum is fine but what is Experienced. It seems to me it should be the items going beyond the basic server and would be better done by separate topics.  It may have to stay for historical searches as I am sure no one wants to pick apart the threads and put them in the following topics. But in future it would be nice to simply go to the following.

Backup,
DevTools,
Email
Fax
File Management
Groupware/CMS
Hardware
Antivirus
Spam
Mac
Linux
Win
Other
Or something akin to this.

I think it should basically match the contribs section.

This would increase user knowledge much faster in my opinion and reduce the continued re-posting of the same questions. Also it would reduce flaming as people will have a better idea of where to post.

I know I have spent innumerable hours trying to pick through threads to properly set up phprojekt. It would be great if I only had to look in a CMS forum.

In addition to voting please state your reasons for yes or no.

Given the trouble we see people have posting to the "proper" spot, it could be argued that we have too many choices already. Plus, it's often not clear which is the best spot to put a particular post on a subject (or a How to, we ran into this issue with the classification page).

What would be nice would be if phpBB had a "Category" field that was required to submit a post, and by which we could sort to create a view of selected threads. However, after a cursory check of http://www.phpbb.com/features.php , it doesn't seem as if phpBB supports this functionality.

Since this is a wiki, and has a forum search feature, one thing you could do is create a page of preconfigured search links. It's not ideal, but with some tweaking and maintenance, it would provide a halfway decent substitute for what you're looking for, once people got used to it. The return seems to be sorted by relevance, and then by date. It would be nicer if it returned threads, instead of posts...

For instance, here's a start on an Antivirus section of a page:

General Antivirus

Clamavis

Trend Micro
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?action=search2&search=trend+micro

Kaspersky

McAfee

It's very confusing for a linux-newbie like me to see messages, contribs, &c. for SME-versions other than the 6.01 I use myself. Maybe most of it also applies to 6.01, but I'm not sure and do not have the time to find out. Why not have everything applying to 6.01 in a separate environment?

And we have plenty of time to scout around dozens of forums to find a question you may have posted on one of them?

Topics containing links to people's sites are unneeded and contribute nothing as a whole, much like topics containing content like this one. You could have PMed a moderator and asked this same question and received the same http://findgraphics.250free.com response. Please do so in the future.

The SME Server documentation and community site is not geared towards 'newbies' but towards how to use and deploy it pratically and safely.

e.g. The Linux Documentation Project is the place for Newbies.
