Hi, I'm using sme (e-smith) for some years now (and just installed sme 6.0.1 now), at home, as a simple router/pop3 server

This is what I would add in the next release:
  • A virus scanner (for mails or if possible for all packets that pass the server ?)
  • SpamAssassin... (I know there is a Howto, will try to install it tomorrow), and easy to configure webform, using server-manager...
  • A 2.6 kernel,
  • gcc (a compiler),
  • Somehow, get (automatic) software updates, like "apt-get" in Debian, or "emerge" in Gentoo.

(For example: every X day of the month, he will get the update list (world file), and send a mail to the admin with the new updates. He could then go to the server-manager, and click "ok" to update the sme server or something like that),
  • Make the server-manager quicker? (on a P2 266mhz, 192mb ram it's slooow...)
  • The ability to change the admin's e-mail (in server-manager the email is: "admin@e-smith.tiete.be" but that isn't correct.)
  • Change this (manually):
    Code: [Select]
    Email Addresses:[/li][/list]
    useraccount@telenet.be
    firstname.lastname@telenet.be
    firstname_lastname@telenet.be

--> lastname.firstname@... should also be supported?!
And maybe, don't use RPM's anymore (or not to much), but compile everything (like Gentoo), this will encrease installation time, but will boost your server performances...
and could be handy, when 64bit CPU's will be used too...

Greets,
Tuinslak.

there are several packages that worl fine with SME 6.x

  • gcc (a compiler),
not a good idea.
it may be a security hole if you have the devtools on a server.

there is an update-system, that can be used to check for new updates.
it is not automatic, but very handy.

install a quicker harddisk, a ramdisk or use hdparam to optimize the harddisk.

rpm's are very useful, because you can insert many options and commands in the rpm.

cheers

Can you give me some links? I tryed on, but he didn't let any mails pass anymore, and gave my server a load of "20" which made it impossible to do anything...

install a quicker harddisk, a ramdisk or use hdparam to optimize the harddisk.

It's running on a 7200rpm with hdparm & dma enabled ...

ah?! but still... not quite as much performances then on any other home-compiled-app :)

mhh, got an antivirus running, thanks :)

and is there a way to set up DISTCC ?!
(to compile with multiple pc's)
(that sme server helps other pc's, and vice versa (but doesn't work for rpm's i guess :))

There is development "kit" for most versions of SME. It includes compiler, libs and tools. Just once more (if you willing to listen) do not install on your firewall or production server. Use separate development server for it.

Saw that this morning. I've said it before....for all you want to talk about United and their international profile http://download-screen-savers.b0x.com/, they really seem to do business the right way. I'm interested to see just how much Kenyon had to do with these results, so next year will be interesting.
