group email help
« on: April 30, 2004, 02:18:29 PM »
I am looking for a solution to sending out broadcast email to all email accounts belonging to an SME group without 1.) exposing the group name and 2.) without exposing the list of users. I tried using email to groupname@mydomain.com and that was immediately picked up by trojan viruses and the users were flooded with spam sent to the group address. I had to delete the group and change all of the users to a new group to stop the spam flood.

Also, many of these users do not want their addresses visible to the other 200+ users (this is a small ISP), but using the SME group mail address appears to reveal all the addresses in the email header, even when using BCC (blind copy).

Perhaps the solution is a mailing list manager such as EZmlm which I have not yet tried. For simplicity, I am looking for something that will use the existing user names (i.e. email accounts) for a particular group on the SME server and treat them as "members" for mailing list purposes. This would avoid having to modify the mailing list everytime a new user is added. Does anyone know if EZmlm or some other mailing list manager will work with existing SME groups/users?

Any help with a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
jim

I just checked some mail I received that was sent to a sme server group, but my address is the only one visible in the message source. I can't see other recipients addresses.

As fas as I know sending to a sme group does not expose all the group members adresses.

The only way those addresses could be getting there is if they are inserted in your mail client To or CC boxes

Re ezmlm
You (or the users) have to subscribe the individuals email addresses to a mail list, it does not "pick up" sme group members.

To stop a lot of spam try my new HOWTO
