Hardware Advice and Kernel Panic
« on: May 03, 2004, 11:02:59 PM »
I have two servers using ECS motherboards with AMD Duron processors. I have been running 5.5 Beautifully on both for over 12 months. Nary a crash or a problem.

I had planned on upgrading them to 5.6 and then 6.0 but when I tried to do an upgrade from a CD image, the machine failed to boot citing kernel panic.

I thought about upgrading by installing the latest rpms one by one, but rather than crash a solid machine I have left them.

So I am looking for any ideas and experience in this area. Are there any known hardware conflicts with ECS and AMD DUron and 5.6 or 6.0?

Thanks for any tips

It's the chipset that may cause problems :-D not the MB brand.
While ECS is marketleader for "cheap" they also seem quite reliable and supported due to sheer mass.
Just memorize that SME/e-smith 6.x is "RH7.3" as far as hardware is concerned and google...
OR
look at the Red Hat Hardware Compatibility List:

P.S.: It's a  SIS chipset - right?  :-x
