Has anyone managed to get a PCI ADSL modem working in an SME server box?

Poking around I noticed that the SME is based on an old Redhat kernel. It has ready to load pppoatm modules, but I cant find out whats compiled into the kernel. Is support for ATM installed?

Idearly I want to get a Conexant ADSL PCI card working as my internet access. This will need a patched pppd, and working drivers. It comes with drivers for Redhat  6.2 & 7.1. Whats stopping us from compiling a later Kernel and adding it to the SME, will the SME still work?

I would experiment, but work wont let me waste time on it.

Any thoughts?

I've been running a Traverse Pulsar ADSL PCI card for over a year in SME 6.0 - very reliable.

You can download the driver and config from my site (see link in sig).

I've not tried to get other cards to work, although there are cheaper ones around. I believe that some of those targeted at Windows rely heavily on the CPU rather than use a full DSP chip, a bit like Winmodems. These are not good news in a server, and there are probably no Linux drivers. I can't remember if the Conexant is like that though.
