My 6.0.01 VPN problems
« on: May 07, 2004, 06:02:51 PM »
Hi,
In our community in Alberta we use TELUS for our ADSL.
I have several servers (15 or so) that are in different locations around town that we have set up to VPN into for management purposes.

Two of these locations are giving this problem:
-Fresh installs / minimal contribs.
-user set up for vpn, and Number of PPTP clients is 2.
-From remote office can establish the VPN connection.
-Can Open PuTTY, log in and get command line.
-If you type "mc" in PuTTy it goes to a black screen, does not error or anything, vpn stays up but nothing happens in putty (MC never loads)
-From remote office can establish the VPN connection.
-If we use TightVNC (or RealVNC etc) we get prompted by vnc for access to the machine we want, but it never draws the screen.

I have found that if under Secure Shell Settings we set it to "Allow Public Access" and then use PuTTy and then try and use MC, it works, but also realize that this is not the way to solve this.

I have also tested telling server manager to allow Admin from my IP, and that works.

Has anyone else encountered this and figured out a solution.

Hello guest,

I have experienced the same problem since version 5.6.  Black screen with MC when you are using VPN.  Are you using putty to connect to the Internet (external) SME nic card?  I found that using the internal IP address of the SME server allows the normal use of putty.

Hope that helps ya.

I was not addressing the systems you connect from.  When you come in from the internet using VPN, try connecting putty to the internal IP address of the SME server.  Then see if MC works.

Hi Ryan,
That is how we always do it.
We always establish VPN to external network.
Anyw work we do once connected we always do using the local IP's.
Have just tried it both ways, and the same results.

I hope you find a solution.  I get the "all black" when using mc in putty over a pptp vpn connection when I connect putty to the internet nic.  "all black" does not happen if I connect to the LAN side nick.......

good luck anyways,

Hi,
It sounds like what you are doing is setting it up to accept ssh over the public internet, and we do not want that.
If you review the original post you will see what I mean.
