I've been using Sony's AIT-1 (IDE and SCSI versions) drives without hassles.

And they still exist in Australia for sure.

Now exabyte, originaly they were "ecrix". I have a dozen or so different models in use. SCSI VXA-1 and VXA-2 and IDE VXA-1.
Use dedicated SCSI adapter from well known and supported brands. (Think Adaptec :-))

Any PCI controller for VXA-1 and LVD capable PCI controller for VXA-2. 160 or 320 Mbs models work great.

how about raid 1 & raid 5 controllers ?

Does adaptec slide into the "SME Friendly" vendor ?

Can anyone recommend some that work well ?

I have many DELL servers with PERC (3 and 4) SCSI RAID controllers. They work fine. IDE RAID subsystems accusys 7500 and 7630 work well too. For cheaper servers builtin software RAID1 (Mirror) fast and stable enough.
