DNS problem

Hello,
My SME 5.6 server has happily resolved DNS requests from, and granted web access to all its clients for 3 years now. Yesterday it started some odd behavior. It resolves host names for about 5 minutes, then it stops resolving for about an hour. Obviously this is halting web access for all of my clients. I have narrowed it down to the SME server, which is in server/gateway mode. All other traffic passes over the server as usual (no problems). I have tried many different DNS servers on my workstation, but it's as though the SME is blocking outbound DNS requests from the internal network.

Anyone experience this? If so, any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks in advance!!

Bill

I run 6.01 and I strongly suggest doing the free upgrade as few are troubleshooting the older releases but....

I would telnet/SSH to the box and do an nslookup. See if the DNS daemon is running or otherwise get some verbose output from the command.

Are you familiar with this command and how to use it to see how DNS is behaving?

patrick

Thanks Patrick, I am familiar with dnslookup. I ran the command, but during the "web down" condition I get a "server can't be found" from nslookup. I installed windows 2003 with AD on my network recently and I think the DNS is screwing with my SME server. This SME problem just happened to start at the same time as the upgrade....I'm no DNS guru, but I think I'm getting closer to finding the answer! ahhh, the joys of being a techie---I will keep you guys updated so nobody has to go through the hell I going through right now...

Cheers!!
