to upgrade with keeping all users etc... do next:
1. Backup (full)
2. boot your server of SME6.0.1 CD.
3. confirm upgrade option (chosen automaticaly)
4. restart then prompted
5. Verify successful upgrade
6. Post here the result.

My English is not good either, but I am sure that was another definition for this behavior. It’s not trusty, but ignorant and stupid not to do backup unless you don’t care about data at all and this is test (empty) server.

Hi Boris!

I hope you can pass onto me your advice re ...

1. does this same advise apply for 5.5 - 6?
or do I have to 5.5 to 5.6 first?

2. Ive gotten confused with just WHAT is the latest 6.0.1 - where do u get it ?

By the way I AGREE with your comments re 'trusty' -
its a variety of other niave adjectives!

Between 5.5 and 5.6 there is huge difference in the internals of SME. Kernel change from 2.2 to 2.4 and ipchains to iptables. In addition, default partition sizes for boot partition changed from 15Mb to 100Mb.
If you upgrading from SME 5.5 or older, I would go with backup data->fresh install-> restore data route although many servers I manage, have been upgraded 5.1.2 (much the same as 5.5) to 5.6 without trouble.

Latest SME is 6.0.1.01 can be found on the ibiblio mirror or on the mirrors linked from download section of this site.

Thanks Boris - I got the download (smeserver6.0.1-01-20040316 - 342464kb, according to WinXP: and I checked the md5sum is ok).
re the upgrade Ive done 5.5 to 5.6 a couple of times successfully and Im unsure of the backup data->fresh install-> restore data route ,
so I'll go the double-easy-way - 5.5->5.6, then 5.6->6.01 as each of these are expected to work (there is clam and squidguard etc to
take into account)and YES I'll have a FULL backup first (gee some of the things one reads on this forum are scary eh Boris?!
thanks again Boris! regards Rob :pint:

I would recommend to uninstall all the firewall and e-mail management related addons before you do upgrade. Once you finish and basic functionality confirmed, then install again relevant addons.

THANKS AGAIN for advice Boris!!!
Maybe I will do a clean 6.0.01 then add on bits!(using a different drive plus backup - a bit of paranoia is good for you eh).
In which case could i trouble for advice on your original suggestion to preserve users etc?
(I'll create new ibays and just cp across)

How many users do you have? If its a lot of users LAT (lazy admin tools) may help to export them to the file and import back later. If is just a few, recreate them and have them reset password is not much of the trouble.

I just wan't say I believe in all guys who make this release .... All DATA are only some mp3 or some drivers, little program like winamp etc...

I think we can upgrade a 5.6 with packages we can found on 6.0.1 RPMS directory. No ?

But some things are not all right like NTP I can't sync my WinXP with my SME 6.0.1...

If your SME is a PDC, research copying your old secrets.tdb over the new one created by the upgrade....

Well Boris, I finally got around to it!
did a 'backup to desktop',
got another drive, did a fresh SME6.01 install,
did a 'desktop restore' - WOO HOO!

used the new clam/amavis contrib (sooooooo EASY),
AND ive got the old drive if needed.

Just got to change some passwords and put squidguard back!

anyone reading this, this I think is the GOOD way
to get a 'clean' instal easily.

Ive just upgraded from 5.6u? (3 or 4, cant remenber) til 6.0.1 - But at the same time upgraded ALL hardware..

Tried to "Backup to Desktop", then fresh install of 6.0.1 on the new machine, and then a restore...

Worked perfectly :-) EVERYTHING got restored, even my portforwarding - which wasnt a part of a standard 5.6 install... The only thing i had to reinstall was Sysmon..

Problems w. backup (SME 5.6 and 6.0)
« Reply #17 on: July 05, 2004, 10:56:45 PM »
I just lost mu 5.6 SME server last week. I happened to install EzMLM mailing list. After which I ran into trouble on the WAN interface. I was constantly running on the capacity limit of my internet-connection. I fear that this package opened up some ports that made me open for SPAM relaying.

Any way I had to rely on a backup of the last good and safe config to take the system back to safe operations. I'm no guru - so I didn't have the tools to troubleshoot this.

This backup was faulty so I had to start over with a New SME 6.0. This was to become an immense task so I looked around on all my folders and disks for an older but flawless backup to restore. I found a SME 5.6 backup. But this made an inconsistent restore on the 6.0 box.

Hence I again had to go the 5.6 road... And now .... Success! So I am at SME 5.6 with data back from august 2003. This is OK as the changes since then are not significant. But I have numerous PHP-Nukes running, which are a pain to recreate individually.

I did not see success when trying to restore an 5.6 backup on my 6.0.

So I think I will have to do a proper upgrade to 6.0...

What about databases - 2 of the databases I had on the old system I recreated manually on the server prior to restore. These DBs are empty. A third that I did not care about has been restored by the restore-job. Can it be true that DBs are only restored if they are not present in MySQL beforehand????

Any thoughts?
