Topic: Changing your Primary Domain

Hi all,

We are changing business names and that means changing web domains... I have an SME6.0.1 server setup with many users and iBays etc and we are changing from domainA.com.au to domainB.com.au.

I'd like to change the primary domain on the server so that everybody can now work through the new name, but can't see an easy way to go about this. I'd rather not have to config the server from scratch again!

I was thinking I would then setup the old domain as a virtual domain and redirect it to the new domain web site and get all the email to forward to the same users at the new domain. Is this the right way to go about this? Is there a better way to make a change like this?

Assuming that domainB.com.au will resolve to the same IP address as domainA.com.au, you should only need to change the primary domain name of your server to domainB.com.au. Then setup domainA.com.au as a virtual domain.

It might be a good idea to have your DNS service provider redirect *.domainA.com.au to domainB.com.au.

You should also change all the workstation e-mail clients to use domainB.com.au.

They do (or shortly will) resolve to the same IP, so I'll follow your advice.
Is there any way to change the primary domain name through the control panel? I've had a look and its not obvious. This may sound dumb, but I've just never had to do this before and I'm not sure what would need to be done to do this on the command line on SME...

Go to the console or login as "admin" using PuTTy. Select menu item 2 "Configure this server", select "YES" to proceed. On the next screen you can change the domain name. Accept all the remaining options and let the server reb
