SME 6 CD Will Not Boot
« on: May 21, 2004, 10:03:47 AM »
Hi there,

I've got a SME 5.5 machine that I'd like to upgrade. I've burnt a SME6 CD which boots fine on other machines but not on the one I'd like to upgrade.

However, on the machine I'd like to upgrade it will boot with the old 5.5 disc.

Any thoughts?

cd drive doesn't like the brand of blank you used?

Have you tried another drive, or burned on a blank from another manufacturer?  Older CD-ROMs sometimes don't like one brand of blank or another.

Thanks I'll try that

I'll certainly give all that a try, but I just wanted to see if anyone had had a similar problem before I tried all that.

By the way, you might think twice ...

... before jumping from 5.5 to 6.01 all in one go ... I did it on one server and I'm sorry, it's never been the same.  I plan on reformatting & doing a clean install but until then it's limping (fine for internal filesharing & gateway duties, but won't provide ANY services to outside users).  You might try 5.5 -> 5.6 -> 6.01 and let the boards know how it works out.  Of course, as usual, YMMV.

I had two Dell PE2600 servers that I tried to install SME6.0b3 on. I couldn't get the server to boot from the CD.  The same CD would boot from other PC's just fine.  I finally installed an older 6.0beta and manually upgraded.

FYI - I have since installed SME6.0.1 on a PE2600 without any issues.
