Jabber works, but...
« on: May 11, 2004, 12:54:17 AM »
Hello -

I spent the afternoon today at work remote-installing jabber on my SME 6.0 server at home.

After opening up port 5222 and finally getting the settings right, it worked. I was able to connect (from work) using Exodus.

When I got home, however, I could not connect from the internal network. I told Exodus to show me the debug xml, and it looks like a DNS problem, so I added the url to the jabber server to the hosts file on my PC and I can now connect.

Even though this works, I hate having to use host files. I plan on implimenting this system at work, where I really don't like host files on the individual stations.

What am I missing? How do I get the client to resolve the jabber server on the internal net?

Also - how do you set up permanent chat rooms in jabber?

Thanks -

Mark

Hostname problems

From what I remember when using this in e-smith 5.5 if you have it set to public and you use your jabber server also as your gateway and DNS it will only work outside the network (Unless using host files or some other method)

If you are just using the jabber server as a stand alone server then you just need to add the host and domain name of the jabber server to the main DNS server you use on your network and you are golden.

For some reason the way the firwall and contrib work the jabber server can't look back at it's self for the host name info when public and being used as a gateway/DNS server.

Jabber works, but... (solution)

I figured it out.

I installed sme-dhcp-dns-0.9-rc1.noarch.rpm (found at http://www.activeservice.co.uk/sme/contribs/) on the server, and I was able to add the hostname that I needed to the server's dns, and now the dns server hands out the right IP when you ask for the jabber server.

God - I love this stuff! There is a way to do just about anything with it!

Thanks again -

Hi Mark,

What do you do for port opening on SME 6.x? There is a great contrib from D May that I used to use on SME 5.x http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/portopening/
but I'm not sure if this would work for 6.x...

Any advice?

Cheers,

Rishi.
