SME 6.0 and printer
« on: February 28, 2004, 10:57:27 PM »
Hi,
I'm quite new at this SME box and I think that is my problem.
I connected my printer (Kyocera FS-600) with my SME 6.0. And my problems began. I connected network printer to SME in my W2k computer. And then if I would like to print test page, my w2k freezes.
Or if I try to print some kind of document. Sometimes it goes all well, but if there are tables or numbered lists then it freezes again. Why?

Thanks

Network printing thruogh SME Server 6.0 is a known problem.

Search for and install the CUPS contrib to overcome this problem.

I found they here http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rvandenaker/beta/e-smith-cups/SME_6.0/
But I do so:

rpm -Uvh http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rvandenaker/beta/e-smith-cups/SME_6.0/cups-1.1.19-8smea1.i386.rpm

I got error:
error: failed dependencies:
        cups-libs = 1:1.1.19 is needed by cups-1.1.19-8smea1
        libcupsimage.so.2   is needed by cups-1.1.19-8smea1
        libcups.so.2   is needed by cups-1.1.19-8smea1
        libtiff.so.3   is needed by cups-1.1.19-8smea1

And all the others were same... :(

And http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/eform/SME%206.0%20final%20updates/Printer%20setup%20problem/ doesn't help me too :(
Why?

Either you have shortened what you did in your example or you have done it incorrectly, if you want to install cups then I suggest you read the how-to first http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rvandenaker/beta/e-smith-cups/documentation/howtos/howto-install-cups.html
There are a few more steps such as removing LPRng first which you never mentioned in your post so I can only assume that you have not done the process correctly, your failed depandancies seem to support this also.

You can however just install the updated rpm that I mentioned earlier which fixes the problem anyway. I would suggest that if you install the rpm that I suggested that you also do the post upgrade and reboot, to do that use the following commands.

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

Assuming that you did install that update correctly and it still doesn't work then it may just be that you have not configured your printer correctly anyway. If you post some more specific details as to how your system is setup you may get some more helpful information

Thanks for that. I installed CUPS and I tried to configure my printer (Kyocera FS-600 in LPT1 port). I tried to print test page in the CUPS interface and it worked. Then I tried to print some kind of Word document and it worked too. I was very happy, but then my problems began again.. I tried to print a test page in w2k computer. Computer freezed, then I opened another word document (this was bigger) and my computer freezed again:(

What is wrong with my SME box? If you would like, I can describe how I configured my printer. Perhaps I made a mistake there..

I cannot help but say, that after i finished configuring  cups, searching the forum for cups and reading the doc for cups it is working from nt, 95, 98, 2000 (sp 1-4), xp (sp 1-2). It never fails. Maybe a local prob with word?

I am running Windows 2000 with SP4. I can print all docs correctly if they are ordinary text. If there are some tables or some lists or tehere are used Drop Cabs, then my computer freezes. (like another w2k computer). It makes me sad - why this problem exists? :(
I describe how I configured my Kyocera:

1. I ran http://server:631 as admin
2. Then Add printer.
3. Name: kyocerafs600; Location: \\server; Description: Kyocera Fs600 and then Continue...
4. Device for kyocerafs600 -> Parallel Port #1 (Kyocera FS-600) I don't know how SME knows it's Kyocera FS-600 :S
5.Model/Driver for kyocerafs600 -> Make: Raw
6. Model/Driver for kyocerafs600 -> Model: Raw Queue (en)
7. You can see screen-shot here: http://www.linnakaja.jogevalv.ee/CUPSSME.jpg .
8. I ran server-manager -> Printers and push the Syncronize button.

I hope it helps. I don't even understand the problem. But are there any version of SME what does not have such a problem? Perhaps I have choosen wrong version. I am running SME 6.0 with this CUPS rpms.

Thanks

This sounds more like a problem on the W2K workstation than a server problem.

You should check the printer driver on the W2K machine to ensure that it is working correctly. Do this by connecting the printer directly to the workstation and try to print the docs that are giving you problems over the network.

Another thing, I have had problems with WinDoz printing when setup to print to a network-printer on lpt1. Instead setup the printer as a local-printer using port '\\server-name\printer-sharename'

If the printer is connected directly my w2k workstation, all goes well. Then nothing is wrong.

did you find out what was causing the freezing? I have the same problem with my windows xp machines printing to my sme 6.01-1. When the printer is local, it works fine.

Following this thread, I found " http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/eform/SME%206.0%20final%20updates/Printer%20setup%20problem/" is not available. Does anywone have a copy of this, or know if it refers to the rpm that in the rpm mirror?

Thanks

Bob
