Maximum Backup File Size

Hi all,

We're trying to do a backup for our e-smith 4.1.1 before upgrading to 4.1.2. We do this through e-smith manager's "backup or restore" menu in a web browser on Windows 2000 Server.

Our problem is that the backup just stops at 3.99GB in Internet Explorer; it stops until disk full in Netscape Communicator. We guess the cause may be that the backup file size is too large - 18GB. So do anyone of you know whether there is a limit to the backup file size, and are there any other methods to archieve our backup purpose? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Best regards,
Gordon

This has been dealt with several times in the lists:

As far as I understand the file size limit in FAT32 is 4 GB, in FAT16 it is 2 GB.

Try to do the backup from a Linux client and you'll find it works:-)

Hi Lasse,

Thank you for your quick response.

But as far as I know the ext2 file system on Linux can support maximum file size of 2GB only, so we try to use Windows 2000 Server which has no limit on file size. It may be that there are other file systems which I don't know. Could you tell me more about that?

Our W2K Server has 20GB of disk space. When we use Netscape browser on that server to download the backup file (which the e-smith manager claims to be 12GB in size), the process doesn't stop until the disk space is full. When we use Internet Explorer, it stops when the downloaded file size is 3.99GB. So we don't know whether the cause to the problem comes from the server or client size.

Anyway, thanks again!

Best regards,
Gordon

Hi Gordon!

I have the same problem but with a brekdown at about 2,2 GB. I also used a W2K (yes NTFS) machine with 40GB Harddisk and IE5.5 to perform a desktop backup.
Did I understand that right: with Netscape your backup worked fine ? Because I think the explorer is the Problem when building an output file from an http download bigger than, in my case 2,2G

A fiend of mine thinks "that Linux ist the problem case it cnt handle files bigger then 2GB. So wehn you perform a Backup e-smith has to build an output file wich is downloaded by the browser."
I am only medium skilled linux user so I am not sure if this is correct.

I switched to Norton Ghost 6.5 to make full backups, because you can make them on harddisk and mulitple CD. :)

Not useabel for upgrade backups :(

So I am still very interested to solve this problem.

hi Wilfried!

Netscape seems not to work fine - the downloaded file is as large as the disk space (about 19G), i.e., Netscape downloads continuously as long as there is disk space left, but e-smith manager claims the backup file size to be only 12G.

thanks for your response!

How do you use Norton Ghost for the backup? Do you restart the server with the startup diskette from Ghost?
