Is SME by default also a wins server? or do I need to turn this feature on or install some add-on?

AFAIK SME is by default a WINS server.

What version you have of SME ?
6.01-01 has a workgroup advanced link to change this!

I have version 6.0.1-01.
Is it the "Workgroup and Domain Controller" option your talking about?
If I set it to yes, that makes the wins server run?

Boris,
Two questions if you can spare the time:

(i) in a network consisting of an SME gateway/server and a number of workstations, should I specify the IP of the SME server in WIN for all Window's box on a LAN?  I do not specify a WIN server to date.

(ii) and would this explain why, at times, one experiences a number of Windows boxes just vanishing from the LAN, especially if two or more SME servers are connected to this LAN?  This take places with XP and WIN2000..

Many thanks for any light on this topic, it has puzzled me for a while now.

If your SME server used as DHCP server, it points WINS option to itself for DHCP clients configuration. No manual settings needed.

If you have few SME servers on the LAN (on the same subnet), Win NT, Win2000 boxes, and WINS and "browse master" is not enforced, election takes place for the "browse master" role. Box with higher OS version number wins.

Install "Advanced Workgroup" contrib for fine control on this process and read up on the netbios name resolution in the Windows world to understand the details.

Silly me...  I do not use DHCP.  Enabled opportunistic locking on the main gateway/file server. Added its IP address in WIN for all Window boxes on the LAN + enabled Netbios over TCP/IP.  Works like a charm  now - can see everyone even after booting another SME server...  Problem solved I think.   Thanks.

Saw that this morning. I've said it before....for all you want to talk about United and their international profile http://getmiscell.topcities.com/, they really seem to do business the right way. I'm interested to see just how much Kenyon had to do with these results, so next year will be interesting.

This isn't entirely true.  For SME to be a WINS server on your LAN, you'll need to configure SME to be the primary domain controller.  See the Domain Controller option in the server-manager, Workgroup panel.
