email issues (SMTP rejects due to dynamic IP)
« on: July 25, 2004, 06:25:52 AM »
Hi. Newly registered to the forums, but not new so SME.  Been using for a while, now on 6.0 and having some trouble with email.  I have SBC DSL which is a PPPoE dynamic IP arrangement.

I've read a number of posts / docs trying to figure this thing out, but no joy.  What I seem to be getting is my email is going out from qmail on myserver.xxx, and since it's a dynamic IP, rejected by many domains.

No matter what I've tried, I can't seem to config so that the actual SMTP server at my ISP is the entity sending the email to the other domains.

Is there a way to simply remove the qmail layer and allow the Windows and Linux clients to reach the POP and SMTP servers at SBC directly?  (If I just end qmail, nothing flows, so I know there is more to it than that...)

I did follow the suggestion to do the following;
config setprop smtpfrontqmail Proxy disabled
to turn off the "stealth" SMTP server, but still no joy.

Again, I'd like to just eliminate the qmail layer and let each client communicate with the ISP directly, for both POP and SMTP.  Possible?

Thanks -

Had the same problem with a client. I did a work a round by setting the server settings in outlook express I checked the box in the server section under outgoing mail server that says "my server requires authorization" then in the settings box I said log on using and put in the user name and password for sbc, and checked th remember password box. May be a little crude, but works.

Crazybob - thanks for the thought, but that is how I was configured to begin with...didn't realize all my mail was just going from the clients to SME.  In fact, I chased SBC tech-less support for a couple of days over this; was getting 'successfully sent' status on emails that never went anywhere.  That's when I discovered I was 'successful' in sending from the client to SME, but SME (qmail) was having probs trying to deliver on.

In many cases, the remote MTA is seeing my email as coming from "qmail at mydomain.xxx' with my nice (and obviously) dynamic ADSL IP address, and not as being sent from SBC's SMTP server.

This is in use for a small cottage enterprise (less than 5 users) so I don't really need the benefits that running my own MTA can provide - I just want to be able to let each client "pass through" to SBC for both POP (incoming) and SMTP (outgoing), but can't seem to figure out how to bypass qmail....

Or optionally, how to correctly configure it....  I've tried several combinations of settings on the "E-Mail" page and whenever I try to send something to an email user on Road Runner, they still send me back a nice rejection based on my dynamic IP....

Anyone know how to - or if I can - just not use the mail server portion of SME 6.0?  I am configured as a "private server and gateway".

Thanks -

I just took a look at the email settings page to see what the settings were, and in the "Address of Internet provider's mail server" dialog box, I put in sbc's smtp server address.

I know you said you have tried a lot of different things, just letting you know what I have done to make it work.

Good luck, and I will continue to watch this thread
