mail messages stuck in que
« on: July 06, 2004, 09:43:39 PM »
Im starting to have a reacurring problem with my mail que. Im running the SME server 5.5 for my email server still. What is going on is, some email from remote sources will get sent to the mail que for delivery or to be sent to an outside email. The email though does not get sent, or bounced. IT just sits there in the que untill I clear it out. I have had some messages sitting in there for close to a week now that are not going anywhere. Is there a way to fix it so the mail does not get stuck in the que and just sit there.

Thanks

Have you looked in the logs for references to these messages?

From what I can see, most all the messages that are stuck in the que are to people that no longer have email address. In otherwords, they are old email address that dont exist anymore.

Under the email configuration, what is set for the "Email to unknown users" option?

Also, are these users accounts actually deleted, or simply locked?

email to unknown users option is set to "return to sender"

and I removed the accounts through the user accounts link. So the accounts dont exist anymore.

Maybee set that to forward to admin...

Reason I say that is I recall that after deleting a user, then trying to recreate using the same user name I got an error.

Perhaps the user names aren't getting deleted properly?

You are living very dangerously, one day you will get hacked and be in a big mess. You should upgrade immediately, first to v5.6 and then to 6.x, in that order to avoid compatibility issues (and uninstal any add on rpms first).

I believe that is normal qmail activity, it will eventually delete them when it gives up trying to deliver them after 7 days.

Use this contrib if you want to manually look at and delete messages in the queue, it adds a panel to server manager, or you can also use command line
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/qmhandle/

Alternatively you can let qmail run on "automatic" as it will eventually delete thos emessages, but you might like to also configure doublebounce message deletion, use this HOWTO
