How Secure is SME
« on: July 21, 2004, 09:53:46 AM »
I have been looking for a product that is easy to use, can be administered through a gui, and secure.  I work for a non profit organisation, that is paranoid about security, I will be using SME Server as a file server, with no internet access at all, a complete stand alone system.

First question, is SME Server the right product, seems to  be excellent from what I have seen.

Secondally how secure is SME, considering the guys I work for are paranoid.

Also if this is not the right product can somebody maybe suggest something else.

Thanks

the answer is.. 42

And with more words: if some is paranoid, then no solution is secure enough. I haven“t had any problems regarding security since my first sme server, but that just one point of view. :)

There are many NGO's & NPO's that use sme server quite successfully and securely.
It is important to keep the system updated when bug fixes or security updates are released, the system will only be as secure as you keep it.

I have been involved with a charity that uses e-smith/sme for over 4 years (online 24/7)without a single security breach during that time, whereas lots of MS servers have crashed and been put out of action during that time period.

If you only wish to use sme as a standalone file server then you have very few security issues to worry about anyway. It will do that role very well, and a whole lot more if you want it to.
