server migration 5.6 to 6.0.1 HOW ???
« on: August 28, 2004, 02:00:27 AM »
Hi all,
Contribs rawks. I use it alot of places. I have a problem but. I have a server with 18gb native of data.  How can I backup this data and settings, format the drive, do a fresh install of 6.0.1 and then restore.
I have used the backup to desktop/restore from desktop method before and it works fine.
It won't work this time as I believe it is to do with the tgz is 10gb. mozilla, konqeror, ie alll spit at the size. Is there an easier way.

You don't need to go through the backup/restore process. Just insert the v6.x install CD and select the upgrade option. Uninstall any sme 6.x non compliant contribs first to avoid problems. The upgrade method will also correctly move your email to the new folder locations.

If you must go through the backup path, then get backup2ws from dmay contrib area, make sure to get the correct upgraded version suitable for sme 6.x and do a 911 backup job split to less than 2Gb chunks. That size of backup and restore may take a long time to do.

It would be easier just to do an upgrade. I don't think there is a lot gained by doing a fresh install.

I was a little worried about the samba password file as the box has around 40 roaming profile accounts on it?

Thanks

Of course it is wise to do a full backup before doing the upgrade, just in case any major problem should occur.
