Upgrading Netatalk & BerkeleyDB4.2
« on: August 03, 2004, 04:44:48 PM »
Has anyone had success in upgrading to netatalk 1.6.4 or 2.0-beta2.

I am sure my problem is the BerkeleyDB files which appear to have compiled and installed without error but can not be found when configuring the netatalk files.

I believe the upgrade is required for Macs to operate with SME correctly. Currently the Macs are on OS9 and have appearing/disappearing files in listing windows.

I will attempt a HowTo if I can get it working.

Netatalk & BerkeleyDB Upgrade

Managed to upgrade BerkeleyDB (4.2.52) with the following command
../dist/configure --with-mutex="X86/gcc-assembly --prefix=/usr/lib/bdb --disable-shared

Netatalk (1.6.4) compiled with the
./configure --with-bdb=/usr/lib/bdb

The problem with disappearing file seems to be cured but the users are locked into their username level on the server (ie) no access to ibays and access to the level above home & mail for the user. If we use admin thier access comes in at / so it can see any lower directory with network access defined.

Has anyone else seen this problem and/or any suggestions on possible cures.

A friends business uses 2 * G5 on OS10.2.1 (I think) to access an SME5.6 fully patched server with no probs to speak of, tho the first cut of OS10 was a pig and he ended up using a different network stack for a while.

OS10 is a huge improvement as long as you use a later cut; if using Dreamweaver spring for Gigabit NIC's & switch, the difference is amazing.

Make sure the users are memeber of the group that has the correct access to the ibays - you will want/need to nominate the network share rather than browse to it (in OS9/OS10??).

I am having problems with a school who is running totally on MACs. I have an SMEServer v6.01 setup as a mail server and proxy cache. they have another 2 MAC Server doing all the authentication and file serving.

The problem I am having is only relating to email timeouts from MAC OSX clients. Those running MAC OS9.2 seem to be find talking to the server downloading emails and sending.

This may or may not be related to your problem but I know the school wants to goto MAC OSX.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Craig

If we can get this up and running then perhaps you could use the SME for network authentication + Internet access etc and sahre the Mac data files from the Server. Unless you are trying to achieve a DMZ.

So far the tests have been good just need to be able to do a SME template that works for compatiabilty.

Thanks for your reply.

The school want to continue with using MACs for the server. SMEServer is purely there for email and proxy-cache. The school access the internet via another network and proxy server that is part or the education departments corporate LAN. You cannot send emails or browse the internet unless you mail server and proxy server point to the education departments servers.

The real problem is getting MAC OSX workstations to talk to the SMEServer mail server to send and receive emails.

Thanks

For anyone interested we have it working but still with the conf/template issue. But the file handling from the Macs is fine and have compiled using the dbd option for the database support. This option is rated as being bullet proof for a slight loss in speed.

Is it possible to just add new template barnches to the template structure? (ie) /etc/atalk/netatalk. It would be good if a new ibay updated the netatalk configuration automatically.
