What ports to open for the esmith server
« on: September 07, 2001, 08:11:56 AM »
I have a new dsl account for which they installed a modem router. They wont open a port for telnet because thats how they access the router. And they wont give me access to the router.  But they did open ports for the webserver, the ftp server , for IMAP and for SSH.
Now my webmail and my server manager wont come up. I'm sure it has to do with some ports not being forwarded. I tried to find a list of all the ports that the e-smith server uses, but did not find it. On top of that I can't figure out how to log into SSH. I went to ssh and looked through support. and all I could find is how to install and set it up. not how to use it. I was used to accessing the server from telnet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,

Kip

Kip,
I use Putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/) as a windoze client for ssh connect. It allows telnet & ssh access (ssh will look just like telnet for you, but is more secure). SSH operates on port 22 (Telnet is on port 23).
You can log in as admin and get the admin console or as root and operate likewise.
You need to have allowed SSH and administrative login via the e-smith-manager panels.
Good Luck

great! I tried it and Im wondering why I wasn't using this before. ITs just like telnet and secure. Now I just have to figure out why the webmail and management console wont work now that Ive relocated the server.
 Thanks,

I think I figured out why the webmail and manager isnt working. The ssl port needs to be forwarded on the router. I think its port 443. But im not sure.

Webmail runs over SSL, but the manager doesn't--it's on port 980.

Thank you so very much. Is there a section in the manual on used ports?

Yes, check out appendix D in the e-smith security white paper, pretty comprehensive document I only noticed yesterday. Manuals, bah humbug !
