Topic: Win 2000 File Sharing

I've set up my e-smith server and I seem to have everything working except file sharing from a windows 2000 machine.
If I try to do anything from My Network on the desktop I get the error message "network path was not found". How do I set the network path?  If I connct using a Linux machine I can connect to the samba server through a konqueror window and file share successfully, so it seems the problem is the settings at the Windoze end. Any thoughts anybody.

This sounds suspiciously like you've either got a setup problem with Win2k, or you haven't set your Win2k workgroup to the same workgroup you've set E-Smith up to.  Check your workgroup settings from the E-Smith manager under Configuration -> Workgroup.  If the settings are the same, try deleting all protocols from your Win2k machine, and reinstall.  Make *sure* that Win2k is set up with the TCP/IP protocol, and that it's set to get all information from a DHCP server.

No i'm joking. I use windows 2000 as workstation and have no trouble with the share I made on my E-Smith Server..

Try doing "net use" on a dos command line and see if there are shares.
If there are, kill them with "net delete"...

I've never saw any trouble with share between Windows 2k and E-Smith...

That is surely not the problem.. under windows 2k you can see any workgroup... I'm not on the same workgroup as my e-smith server and it works...

DHCP Server is not the problem.....
But it could be if your computer does not have an ip on the same range as your server...
Be sure to activate DHCP it is better and safer...

I have already made sure the workgroup names are the same and I did try uninstalling everything except TCP/IP.  I'll try to reinstall that.  Is that all I need!

There is a last thing you can try.

Click on "Start => Run..."
and you type : "\nameofyourserver\"

If a window opens that means you can access your server
so that is not a windows 2k problem.

Then try to double click on a shared folder and see if you
can get into it...

This is what I've tried so far.

when I do Start - Run - \servername\  I get "the network name cannot be found"

I have checked that TCP/IP is installed  (I can get E-Mail, connect to the web and connect to the E-Smith manager OK

I've tried it with LMHOSTS enabled and disabled, I've tried it with "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP"
 and "Use NetBios setting from the DHCP server" but no difference.

If I try My Network Places - Entire Network and then right click and select Properties I get "The Properties for this item are not available"

If I try net view \servername I get "The Workstation service has not been started"

I'm sure I'm missing something fundamental!

Firstly try connecting to the ip address of the server i.e. \192.168.1.1 and see if you can then see the server.

If this doesn't work - it sounds like you dont have the client for microsft networks installed.  Without this you won't be able to access the e-smith server shares.  Check the network properties on the LAN network connection and ensure that under the Networking tab - that this is enabled.

Thanks for all your suggestions.  I have now solved my problem by installing the Microsoft networking client.  I knew it was something fundamental!  Why didn't Windoze simply say that in their error messages?
