"root" access using Windows Explorer?
« on: September 17, 2004, 01:15:14 AM »
I have set up a SME GW sucessfully, and have no problems accessing the I-bays, but i wuld also be able to access all the other info on the SMW box so that I can copyu rpm-files from my main-cpouter to the GW for execution. How can I get access to the other folders on the box?

Hi thernes,

If you created an ibay called upload, copied your rpm-files to it, then you could ssh to your SME box and access the files by changing directory to /home/e-smith/files/ibays/upload/files.

Or if you wish to update from a windoes environment, you could install mitel_update-system-0.0.1-16, this contrib will do just that, and more.  Check:

If it does not work out of the box, please fill in a Bug Report @ Bugzilla (http://bugs.contribs.org)  - check: http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help .  Thanks.

You do this via SSH.

Use Winscp http://winscp.sourceforge.net/ for file transfers (up & down).

Use Putty http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ for command line access.

I am aware of that I can use shh and use a text based client like putty to do this, but i would like full access to the system, so that I can edit all the config-files in my text-editor, etc.

Hi thernes,

I know this is not exactly what you are after... but there is a great app called WinSCP (http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/) that has an interface similar to Windows Explorer. It will be able to log in using a username and password with shell access and you can browse your files system, upload files, download files, etc. in a nice graphical interface.

It also help you to get farmiliar with your filesystem and SME structure.

See you how you go,

@bobk

I bit quick with my anser. I see that Winscp is probably just what I am looking for.

I just had my mind set on getting the same functionality in windows, with no other tools that the windows explorer. i remember I could do this a long time ago when I tested the ClarckConnect GW.

You can see the SME box in Network Places or Network Neighbourhood, but not if you have it in the Orange zone, only if it is in the green, or you are using it as your actual gateway.

You can only access the SME system remotely using SSH for security reasons. SME is not the same as ClarkConnect for a very good reason.

WinSCP is you best bet. The editor saves in unix format and file transfer can be set to preserve ownership and access rights. The only thing you cannot do with WinSCP is execute commands, for that you will need PuTTy.

That'll do just fine. I have no problems using putty to execute the commands. Thank you very much for your help

BTW, a bit curious, as I was concidering ClarckConnect, when I stubled upon SME Server; What makes you say

Is the SME server a lot better or a lot more secure?
