Problems migrating from 5.1.2 to 6.0.1
« on: November 02, 2004, 01:06:06 PM »
Hi,

A few days ago, we purchased a new server and tried to migrate from 5.1.2 on the old server to 6.0.1 on the new one.
I did a desktop backup from the old server and resored it to the freshly installed new server.

After the restore all the users, ebays, groups and so on were ok. Only, the server couldn't resolve any hostnames. No nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf.
I noticed that in 5.1.2 named is started in inittab, but not so in 6.0.1.
Windows clients also couldn't log in.

Isn't all the config data backed up ?
Why is named not started from inittab like in 5.1.2 ? And how can I enable it ?
How do I go about enabling windows clients to logon ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I got bit by just this problem; others have reported success by upgrading thusly:  5.1.2 -> 5.5 -> 5.6 -> 6.0, but of course it was too late for me at the time.  I ended up reformatting the box, which was probably pretty drastic but did the trick.

So basically I'm doomed :-o. Great, so either you go through the painstaking process of downloading 2 iso images, burning them, installing/updating 3 versions of sme server before updating to the final one (while praying like hell), or you enter a perhaps never ending session of tweaking the system. What a choice
Me thinks this is a candidate for the 'zo moet het niet' (not the way to go) award.

Thanks for the response. A nice big bottle of whiskey should bring some relief before trotting away on the path of glory  :pint:

Do you, by any chance, happen to know where I can find those version ? I've tried conribs.org, e-smith.org and mitel.com without any success.
Thanks in advance.

The upgrade was successful and fairly simple. I had to relocate the netlogon batch file by hand, but apart from that no glitches at all.

Thanks again.
