I think that SME server is a great distro. However I think the gateway distro space is now overserviced.

I think a distro that was complimentary to popular distros such as IPcop/smoothwall and open source cross-platform projects such as Mozilla and OOO would be very popular as well.

Features such as easy to use groupware and intrusion detection are in demand and have not been serviced by most distros. Easy to use ebtables are another important feature that is normally provided by expensive cisco devices, which most small businesses cannot afford.

I use my SME server with Windows so antivirus such CLam AV would be important to me.
 
Finally the apt-get update feature in clarkconnect is great. An easy to use front end such a synaptic to update SME server would useful.
