e-mail relay - not allowed?
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:29:42 AM »
from a not so new, but not so smart user, me:

Silly questions:  My ISP does not allow relaying from my SME server.  1.  Will most ISPs work with someone to allow their servers to relay through them?  2.  How can I bypass the e-mail services of my SME server?  My client machine sends mail, supposedly using my ISPs smtp server but nothing gets delivered and my admin account on SME gets messages from my ISP with "relay access denied".  Do I need to shut down the SMTP services on the SME server?

I found a way in release notes to turn off smtpproxy which is seeming to work.

If in your client you have your ISP's mail servers address entered into the smtp server box then it will use your ISP to send mail. If this is not the case then you need to contact your ISP and ask them why, if you are on their network using one of their dhcp addresses and in their netblock, can you not send using their server.

So the question is:

What do you have in your mail client as the SMTP server?

I do have their server in the proper place in my client's configuration but the smtp-proxy from SME was grabbing it and relaying it apparently.  I disabled the smtp-proxy on port 25 on the SME server and everything seems to be working now.  I looked at:

which helped me out a bit.
