I downloaded the SME server a couple of days ago and installed it. I have a couple of questions regarding SME:
- Now that Lycoris is "owning" the SME server are they changing  the packaging to debs? Since Lycoris is a debian based distro.
- I am a Debian user. Does SME offer an easy upgrade system like debian (like apt-get) or do I have to download an ISO and upgrade it manualy? If not are there any plans for using such a system?
- the SME server is now running inside my network and I haven't tested the firewall and DHCP functionality...how secure is this firewall? and if I connect the server to a adsl connection will it try to get the ipaddress automatically?

I don't think so, that wouldn't be very wise.

I use yum (yellowdog update manager) and it works nice .

All depends on how your network is setup. Read carefully while installing.

SME Server is based on Redhat 7.3.  You can use any RPM available.

Since SME uses Redhat, use the RPM manager.  I would suggest you download and install the Update system Contribution.  It allows you to run RPM updates from the SME Web console. //dungog.net/sme/files/index.php  Download the sme-server-update-system-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

The firewall is as secure as you will make it.  By default, it will allow outgoing connections as will any firewall.  Incomming connections will be halted at the SME server and any services hosted by the SME server will be accessable.  You have the option to forward ports through the firewall.  Not sure about the ADSL connection, but SME picks up an external DHCP IP address on my cable modem without any problems.  When you run the server setup manager (from a remote console or at the server itself), you have the option to determine what type of external connection you are using.  If your ADSL supplier requires Hostname information or other authentication information, I believe that those options are available with SME Server.

In my humble option, SME Server supplies the most value and security possible.  Even if it is running an earlier version of the Linux Kernel.

Actually, Lycoris is based on Caldera; AFAIK.

However, I don't think they are looking at moving away from a Redhat Core.  That would be very painful.
