Unable to Edit index.htm in Primary Folder
« on: September 05, 2005, 06:45:18 PM »
From within my local network, how does one edit the default home page within the Primary Folder?  I've tried to edit it but it tells me permission is denied.

What settings need to be adjusted on SME to permit this or what is the process?  Thanks.

How have you tried to edit it?

If your going in the a consol window login as root and that will give you access. Alternatively, login as admin through samba.

Thanks for the reply.

The mission goal is to be able to edit the index.html file remotely either via the Internet or other PCs within my local network.  There will be few and limited occasions in which I will be able to physically sit in front of the SME box itself so access and updates really need to happen via some type of remote access.

Using my local area network, I can access the folder in which index.html is located, open it in an HTML editor program but when attempting to save the changes back, a permissions error seems to arise.  But, accessing the folder to start with requires me to log in (username/password) so I'm already "in" so to speak when editing is occuring.  It sounds to me like I have "read" access but not "write" access.  Can I not set my username permissions to "full access", i.e. do anything when I log in via a browser as "admin"?

As I said in a previous post, I'm new to SME.  I have had quite a bit of experience with Fedora though.

I have not had any problems editing any file I try to

I use gftp - comes with Fedora

Set up the editor like gedit in your gFTP program under FTP - options then you can ftp to your SME server as admin local access is fine, open your Primary html folder right click on your index.html file and select edit gedit pops up make your changes save the file by clicking on the save button and when you close gedit gFTP then asks if you want to upload the new-saved file it's pretty simple for making your changes

Hope this helps

As the previous poster says, you need to be logged in as "admin" to be able to write to files in the Primary i-bay.

Thank you both!

Logging in as Admin worked.  Thank you.
