XP Workgroup printer - Access denied, unable to connect
« on: October 20, 2004, 10:40:16 PM »
Trying to print from Win XP to a USB printer on SME Server 6.

Error:sme-server Access denied, unable to connect

Win XP-Pro SP-2
SME Server-Only-6.0.1-01
HPLJ 4 printer with a parallel to usb cable connection

Followed Robert van den Aker's How to install CUPS? version:20040131.0 step by step.
Checked for install with rpm -qa to list all installed rpm's and all seven of the CUPS rpms for version SME 6.0 were listed.
Setup the printer with the CUPS Print Server Manager and selected the correct HP 4 Linux driver.
I can do a "rpm --help | lp -d printer-name" and it prints the listing properly.
In Win XP the printer is listed in the Printers and Faxes panel but the status is "Access denied, unable to connect.
I can set it up for Windows and select the correct Windows driver.

No errors in /var/log/cups/error.log or
access.log.

I tried: lpadmin -d hplj4 -u allow:all (that didn't change anything)

The printer is shared in XP.

The user has a valid and the same XP and SME login name and password.

I did a http://server-name:631/ and that brought up the Print Server Manager GUI.

I googled and found several references to the same problem in various Linus distributions but no answers to the problem. Can anyone help me out here?

I had exactly this but the crucial point was: the print-job is done. In Windows it always says the printer is not connected but the workstation is able to print. This in not very helpful, sorry.

Disclaimer: I am new to linux and SME

I don't think that the sme server allows guest connections to the printer by default. This may be the problem. You can try installing the e-smith-advworkgroup-0.3-4.noarch.rpm . I seem to remember seeing an option on that panel that allows guest access to the printer. Other wise you may have to authenticate to the server before printing. Just a guess.. hope it helps.

The advanced workgroup panel - setting guest access to printers did it for me.

My server Manager Panel - Advanced Workgroup, has only three entries: Max Connections, WINS Server IP, and the misspelled 'Oppurtunistic Locking'. What Advanced Panel are you using?

James Price made this and there is a lot newer one than this in his d/l area here; it doesn't work with the Samba 3 update to my knowledge.

Thanks, smeghead. I downloaded and installed the update. Good stuff.
