Remote Access Recommendations
« on: July 12, 2004, 03:45:34 PM »
Hi All,

I have :-

LAN with a 2KSBS PDC & SME 6.0 IMAP server.
A laptop with analogue modem.

The PDC has an analogue modem for network faxing.
The mailserver is behind an ADSL Nat router.
The router has no VPN options.
(But it might be able to re-drirect ports?)

My question is - what is the simplest way to give a laptop user access to the IMAP folders running on the SME 6.0 ?

Check out Damien Curtain's Secure mail contrib over on www.pagefault.org

Uses SSL for POP3, SMTP & IMAP & works perfectly - highly recommended.

Nick,

If I enable IMAP over SSL will I have to open a port
up on the router ?

I know the WAN side IP address but am not sure how configuarable the router is (yet!)

Will go onsite tomorrow.

Depends on the router - my router has no firewall of any sort, but the ports you need to open are:

SMTP   465
POP3   995
IMAP   993

If you want to be able to send mail, you will need to configure the client to send over SSL SMTP in addition to SSL IMAP.  IMAP on its own won't allow you to send mail through the server.

Cheers Nick,

As long as they can collect - they could
send via the dial up providers smtp.
