Some feedback to assist other users.
Didn't ever manage to get insmod to load the sk98lin.o drivers that are in 6.0.1-01 custom (kernel 2.4.20-18.7) or with Lloyd Keen's drivers from here
http://www.comnetel.com/sk98lin.oHowever, I think there may be issues with VIA motherboards and life is too short.
I bought a Netgear GA311 (Realtek 8169 chipset) and SME6.0.1-01 custom detected it and installed the correct drivers.
Haven't tried an Intel chipset as those cards are much dearer in New Zealand but they should work fine.
