How is dns service configured in 6.01.01?
« on: December 06, 2004, 03:27:19 PM »
I have a new install of 6.0.01, which i did a backup from a 5.0 sme server, everything seemed to go ok, including mail directories, but the DNS just refuses to work.

I'm not sure other stuff is doing too well either..

Dns would probably be the most important thing at the moment though.

Any clues?

unless you're supplying your own DNS service you need an outside source to map your IP to your Domain name.

Example: I have a 1 static IP but cannot provide my own DNS service so I use a company on the internet that provides free DNS services. I have the e-smith and have a webserver on it as well as a firewall but when you type in my domain name that online service maps it to my IP address.

When you did this, did you re-install 5.0, then restore the backup and then upgrade to 5.5, then to 5.6 and then to 6?  If you did not, then you will encounter alot of problems.  The program for dns has changed since the 5.X series.  5.0 and 5.5 uses ipchains, whereas 5.6 and 6 use iptables, 6 uses tinydns for dns resolving as 5.X uses named...

Well, DNS didn't work, as it refused to resolve any addresses, even local ones..

Ip would work without issue.

I bit the bullet and just did everything from scratch, as I don't have time to download 5, install it, then install 5.5 then 5.6 , then 6.01.. :(

The only issue I'm having now is that of copying of some maildir stuff, for a user that did everything via IMAP.

What a headache. On the plus side, I now have hylafax respnding through 4 different modems on that machine.  :D

Thanks for the help, wish I could have read it earlier .
