USB Wireless ?

Has anyone managed to get a USB wireless adaptor working with SME?
Have you found anywhere with instructions? I did a few googles, but really came up blank due to lack of knowledge with Linux.
Problem I have is that I have superb little PC that runs  very cool and silent, but sadly has no expansion slots, it's only got serial, parallel and a couple of USB ports.

Regards Paul.

Paul,

Why does your WLAN have to be "on board" ? ...or in the Server ??

Just use a WLAN-Access-Point or a WLAN-Router (and you may just ignore the routing part too) on your internal Ethernet replacing (?) your switch.

A perfect example run by several contribs members is the Linksys WRT54G...

Well basically I have only one built in network interface, which I will connect to my ADSL router. I want to use wireless for the local machine access. Which in essence means I wish to use the SME in Gateway mode.

Hope that makes sense.

Paul,

Code: [Select]
makes sense?

Nope - not really.
You cannot use the SME in gateway mode with just one NIC only. An outside (red) and an internal (green) NIC are needed.

In addition you should notice that even a fast 54Mbit or  higher WLAN connection,
while quite OK for surfing and Internet access,
makes things crawl if used as server access path... WLAN ain't cable :-x

IOW go for one of the VIA boards if you want it small and SME as gateway server.

Paul,

you could use a usb/ethernet port to your ADSL modem (some adsl modem have a usb port as well) and your standard ethernet for th LAN. The ADSL is likely to be the slow part.

Yes I take you point, it does seem dumb using wireless USB for the local lan, and then putting a network card onto ADSL with 1MB!

Basically I have an access point for my local lan, runs a couple of portables and my Tivo. My ADSL router does not have wireless, so hence me wanting the local lan side talking to the SME on the clean side of it. And the dirty side connected directly to the router.
I am only using the SME to store files that I can pickup whilst out onsite, and speed is not that much of an issue for the local lan. The other thing was that I got the USB Wireless card and E-PC for free, which is quite a nice incentive to use it.

From my googling it's seems a bit of a black art with Linux, so think I might just give up and ditch the project altogether. I love playing Linux but find the driver situation still an utter nightmare. (Not Linux fault but the manufac's ) This time Buffalo = 0 Linux drivers
