eth0 goes down after high network activity
« on: December 06, 2004, 07:58:43 PM »
I have esmith 6 running in server only mode and use it as an email server and file server.  When I download or upload a large number of files either via ftp, http or samba the network interface will die.  Doing a ifconfig eth0 down then up does not fix the problem.  I can log in from console fine and do not see any problems.  This is a remote server so I can't really test too much exept on weekends when I can make the 2 hr drive to it.  I have set a cron job to reboot the system at night so at most I only loose conection for a few hours.  Any thoughts on what might be the problem?

Thanks
Sage

Check the NIC statistics through ifconfig eth0 and see if it reports an unusual number of bad packets.

look at your messages log file.  Are you using a 8139 based nic?

Had same thing happen with 8139 nic as it was going bad.....

run about 10-12 gb of data through it a day .... guess it was tired.
