Topic: E-smith 3.1 fails to dial the Internet

I just installed E-smith 3.1 and set it up for dial-up Internet on COM1 and COM2 but it never dials.  It doesn't even pick up the phone.  It does flash lights on the 3com V.90 though.  Anything I should check first.  Maybe a debug view of the dial process to see where it is failing?  Thanks.

Are you sure that it doesn't dial? Or is it that you can't hear it dial? The modem speaker is turned off in the e-smith server.
Log in as root with the admin password (Alt-F3 to get a login prompt), then view the main log file (less /var/log/messages)
and search for log messages from chat, pppd and diald.
