Topic: Unable to post-upgarde SME 5.6

I'm updating SME 5.6 to update 6 from
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/......./esmith/updates/5.6/Update6/RPMS/

This is executed at the console.

# rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs *.rpm
Packages are replaced with no errors

# /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
--> Hangs at this point
[ctrl ^c results in this message]

Solution:
Rather simple
- Shutdown services
Re run post-upgrade ; reboot

Is there an easy way (i.e. single command) to shut down all running services...and to start them up again? I'd like to do an upgrade, but I'm not currently on-site with the machine and I'd hate to need a power cycle...
